    Scope eye piece focus questionWhat

I do know how to focus the eye piece on a scope.
my question is ...... every time I am at a gunshow and an “older guy” picks up any given scope, the very first thing many do is back the eye piece wayyyyyyyyy OUT and then focus the reticle. I usually reset all used scopes I pick up by first recentering the crosshairs on a mirror, then turn the eye piece all the way IN and then back it back out until reticle is focused.
These “old guys” must know something I do not. Does it possiblly add a bit of magnification? Does it extend eye relief? What in the blazing hell is the reason these guys do this? I could test it myself, but its cold, crappy and I am too lazy. Hoping someone here has an answer before I try this. I always forget when at the range.
I have no idea what the hell I am doing.
So I just keep shooting. It all works out in the end.

The old guys DO know something that you younggins do not know. Our eyes are fer shit!!
The ocular part of a scope is to focus the reticle for your eyes. That is the only thing that it does. As our vision fades we need much more adjustment.
I am 70 years old. Any scope needs to be screwed almost all the way back for my eyes. I automatically go all the way back/out,then just a couple turns in. This gets it pretty close.
The downside to this is that it takes away some of the much needed eye relief used for some heavy recoiling guns.
The scopes third turrett is for focus/parallax adjustment. The AO (adjustable objective) at the objective end of some scopes do the same thing. If a scope has neither, they are usually set parallax free at 100yds. --- SAWMAN

Well ..... I guess I have never tried it. I did not think THAT much adjustment was ever required.
    Thanks for the replies.
